Export Market Development Grants

What is EMDG?

A Government grant which allows Australian companies to claim back eligible expenses spent on Marketing their products/services overseas.

What's in it for me?

$5,000 for eligible expenditure between $10,000 and $20,000, PLUS 50c in every dollar spent from $20,001 to $410,000.

Is my business eligible?

If your business is a registered company regulated in accordance with the law of a State or Territory, see below for company eligibility.

Company Eligibility

If you can answer yes to the questions below, it will potentially be eligible to apply for an EMDG.

Do you own the product/service you intend to export? (In other words you're not selling the product on a commission basis.)
Is your product made or assembled in Australia? If not, will Australia derive a significant net benefit from the sale of your product outside Australia?
Have you made less than 8 previous EMDG claims?
Is your turnover less than $50 million?
Have you spent at least $10,000 on export marketing activities in the previous financial year?

New Changes to EMDG Scheme

  • Maximum grant increased to $200,000, therefore maximum expenditure is increased to $410,000
  • Maximum turnover of applying companies is now $50 million.
  • Minimum expenditure needed to apply is now $10,000.
  • Costs of patenting products overseas are now eligible expenses
  • Number of grants able to be received by a business increased to 8.
  • State, Territory and regional economic development and industry bodies can now apply for EMDG
  • Products no longer need to have 50% Australian content, there is now a 'net benefit to Australia' test .

Important Dates for EMDG

  • 1 July-Submissions open for the EMDG Scheme.
  • 30 September-Claims lodged up until this date will receive their first instalment of up to $40,000, approximately 4 weeks after lodgement.
  • 31 October-Claims lodged during this month will receive their first instalment of up to $40,000, approximately 8 weeks after lodgement.
  • 30 November-Claims lodged during this month will receive their first instalment of up to $40,000, approximately 6 months after lodgement.
